Watering and Fertilizing Palm Trees

Palms like to be watered but don’t get carried away with it. Palms in the ground only have a root depth of 18” - 24”. If you water for 30 minutes with a flow rate of 5 gallons a minute, the nutrients in the soil will be washed down below that level. Shallow watering won’t get to the root base. 


A 6 foot palm planted in the ground needs about 2 gallons of water each time you are watering. The same palm in a container will need less water. Water demands for container palms is determined by water flowing out of the drain holes in the pot. The ideal amount is just a little within a few minutes of watering.


Fertilizing: We use Palms NW Fertilizer Spikes with great success. Please see application chart below.  


Do not use Miracle Grow with palms!

Palm Tree overall height / Number of spikes to be used:

2' to 3' Tall Palms, 1 half spike placed on opposite sides, 8” out from trunk

3' to 5' Tall Palms, 2 spikes placed on opposite sides, 18" out from trunk

5' to 7' Tall Palms, 3 spikes placed equally apart, 18" out from trunk

7' to 9' Tall Palms, 4 spikes placed equally apart, 24" out from trunk

10' Tall and up Palms, 5 spikes placed equally apart, 24" out from trunk
